For physicians & healthcare professionals

Certain sections of the Income Tax Act apply specifically to your practice. We know them well.

Physicians face rules most small businesses never meet, and so do dentists, pharmacists, therapists and clinic owners. These are the questions we work through with healthcare clients every year.

Health · 01

Should I incorporate?

When a professional corporation makes sense for your practice, and what it costs to run one properly.

Health · 02

Salary or dividends

Balancing personal tax, RRSP room, CPP and cash needs across the family.

Health · 03

Life insurance or RRSP?

Whether corporate-owned life insurance or RRSP savings better fits your retirement and estate plans, and what the sales pitch leaves out.

Health · 04

Passive income

Keeping corporate investments from eroding the small business deduction.

Health · 05

HST for clinics

Which of your services are exempt or taxable, input tax credits, and cost-sharing between practitioners.

Health · 06

Exit and estate

Winding down a practice, moving surplus out of the corporation and planning an estate that carries into the next generation.

A second opinion is welcome too. If you’ve been offered an insurance or surplus-strip strategy, we’ll review it before you sign.

Who we serve

Advice built around how you actually earn.

We work best with people whose tax picture has moving parts: a corporation, a clinic, family shareholders, or income on both sides of the border. Wherever you are in Canada, we work with you by video and secure portal.

Healthcare professionals & clinics

For physicians and every healthcare practice

Incorporation, compensation, clinic structures, associate and cost-sharing arrangements, and the HST questions that come with patient care, whether you practise on your own or run a multidisciplinary clinic.

  • Physicians & specialists
  • Dentists
  • Pharmacists
  • Psychologists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Chiropractors
  • Registered massage therapists
  • Clinic owners
  • Other regulated health professionals

Owner-managed

Service businesses

Bookkeeping, T2s, HST and planning for small and mid-sized companies.

Individuals & families

Personal returns and sole proprietors

Estates, trusts, rental property, retirement and succession.

Cross-border

Non-residents & cross-border

The Canadian tax side of working, investing or moving across the border, for individuals and companies.

Services

Year-round, not just at tax time.

We go beyond return preparation. Every engagement pairs the filing with the planning behind it, so decisions get made before the year closes.

Tax planning & advisory

Structure first, then file. We model the options and put the recommendation in writing.

  • Tax planning for individuals and corporations
  • Salary versus dividend and compensation strategy
  • Retirement, estate and succession planning
  • Corporate reorganizations
  • Structuring start-ups, mergers and acquisitions
  • SR&ED claims

Cross-border

Coming to Canada for work? Start with the Canadian tax.

We advise non-residents and their advisors on what Canada taxes, what gets withheld, and how to recover or reduce it. We coordinate with your home-country accountant to help you avoid double tax.

Scenario

A US actor filming a production in Canada

The treaty threshold, the flat 23% withholding on acting fees, and whether an elective Canadian return at graduated rates costs less.

Scenario

Producers, directors and crew working in Canada

Regulation 102 and 105 withholding, waiver applications, and foreign tax credits back home.

Scenario

A non-resident who owns Canadian rental property

Part XIII withholding, section 216 returns and the clearance certificate when you sell.

Scenario

Moving into or out of Canada

Residency, departure tax, part-year returns, and coordination with your US or home-country preparer.

How we work

From first call to long-term advisor.

i.

Free discovery call

Fifteen minutes, no charge. We learn your structure, your goals and what’s keeping you up at night.

ii.

Engagement & onboarding

A clear engagement letter, then documents exchanged through the secure client portal.

iii.

Plan, then file

We review the planning opportunities before preparing returns, not after.

iv.

Year-round access

Questions answered as they come up, with a check-in before every year-end.

Why Sycamore

Deep roots. Wide shelter. Growth that lasts.

The sycamore is a patient tree. It anchors itself well below the surface, spreads a broad canopy over what grows beneath it, and adds a little more every year. That’s what we want to be for our clients: helping them build strong foundations, protect what they’ve earned, and grow it for the long run, not just from one tax season to the next.

A nod to medicine. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, is said to have taught his students under a plane tree, a close cousin of the sycamore, on the Greek island of Kos.

A little tax story. Remember Zacchaeus? He was the chief tax collector in Jericho, short enough that he had to climb a sycamore to see over the crowd. That day changed him. He gave half of what he had to the poor and paid back anyone he had overcharged four times over. A tax man who climbed a sycamore and came down doing things the right way is a good story to build a firm on.

Brian is my favorite accountant! Not only is he professional and knowledgeable, he is so responsive and easy to talk to. As a filmmaker based in LA, it’s really intimidating to navigate taxes for jobs in another country, but Brian always finds a way to make me feel at ease (that does so much for someone who finds these processes overwhelming). I always refer friends who end up working in Canada to him, so for whatever tax related issue you have, he’s your guy!
RSRoxy Shih
I had an excellent experience working with Brian. He is professional, pays attention to detail, and manages my taxes effortlessly. I highly recommend Brian if you’re looking for a highly skilled, reliable, and trustworthy accountant.

Questions

Before you call.

Straight answers to what new clients ask us most.

Who is Sycamore Tax & Advisory?

Sycamore Tax & Advisory is the operating name of Brian Li CPA Professional Corporation. Same firm, same team, same client portal. The name comes from the sycamore, a tree that grows steadily for generations, which is how we approach planning.

What does it cost to get started?

Your first 15-minute discovery call is free. Monthly packages for professional corporations start at $250 + HST. If you want specific advice on your situation, an initial consultation is $300 + HST for up to an hour, and that fee is waived if you engage us for regular tax preparation or consulting work. See our fees.

Should I incorporate?

Often, but not always. Incorporating can defer tax when your business earns more than you need to live on, but it adds costs, filings and a second set of books. We look at your income, what you could leave in the company, your family situation and your plans, and we will tell you if it is not worth it yet.

CRA sent me a letter. Can you help?

Yes. We handle audits and reviews for income tax, payroll and HST, including the correspondence with CRA and the supporting documentation.

Do I need to be in Ontario?

No. We are a mostly virtual firm and work with clients across Canada, as well as non-residents with Canadian tax obligations. Meetings happen by video, and documents move through a secure client portal. Our office is in Mississauga.

I’m not a Canadian resident. Can you help?

Yes. We advise on the Canadian tax side of cross-border situations, such as performers and crew working on Canadian productions, foreign companies with staff here, and non-residents who own Canadian property. We work alongside your home-country advisor.
